GARBAGE COLLECTION
 Take garbage out to the specific collection sites on the specified dates between 6:00am and 8:30am, following the municipal garbage collection schedule.
 Leaving garbage on dates other than the specified dates and breaking the rules cause inconvenience to the residents near the collection sites. Maintain good management of the collection sites with the cooperation of the whole community.
 Business owners are required to have their waste disposed of by a professional garbage collecting company or take it to the municipal refuse disposal facilities.
 
RECYCLABLE RESOURCES
 Be proactive in recycling newspapers, magazines, cardboard, aluminum cans etc as much as possible. Take those recyclable items to the special collections organized by the schools' PTA or the municipal recyclable resources collection sites.
 There is also a recyclable resources collection sites at the municipal refuse disposal facilities where you can take recyclable items directly.
 
REGISTRATION BANK FOR REUSING UNWANTED ITEMS
 In order to promote an effective reuse of unwanted general merchandise, we have established the "Registration Bank for Reusing Unwanted Items", which help people exchange unwanted items.
 The registered items are announced in the "Bulletin Karuizawa" and on the whiteboard located at the information desk at the General Affairs Division, Subsection of Residents of the town hall.
 We also hold a flea market in March, around the same time as the Health Festival.
 
FUNDING FOR PURCHASING REFUSE COMPOST CONTAINER
 In the case of purchasing a household refuse compost container, funding will be given to that household. The amount of funding will be less than half of the purchased price (maximum ¥50,000) per container per household.
 To apply for this funding, bring forward the receipt of the purchased refuse compost container (original receipt only), a photo showing its set up, your personal seal (inkan) and bank account details to the Consumer and Environmental Protection Division. (The application form is available at the Town Hall information counter).

  • Trays are also collected at supermarkets.

Bulky waste
  • In case of taking bulky waste to the refuse disposal facilities yourself, there is a charge of ¥100 per 10kg.
  • In case of going to a specified collection site, put a ¥200 sticker on each item. The stickers can be purchased at the ward office or consumer and environmental protection division.

Items that are not collected by the municipal garbage collection services
  • Items that are subject to the Home Appliance Recycling Law such as TV's, Washing machines, refrigerators and air-conditioning unit cannot be taken by the municipal garbage collection services. Ask an electric appliance shop to take the old ones when replacing them.
  • Architectural waste, agricultural chemicals, active drugs, tires, incineration ash, car related parts cannot be collected by the town. Ask the professionals or distribution outlets to take these items for you.
  • Personal computers cannot be collected as a bulky waste. When you need to dispose a computer, ask the computer manufacturer to collect it (however, if the computer's manufacture no longer exists or you made your own computer, those computers can be collected as bulky waste).
   
 
HOME APPLIANCE RECYCLING LAW AND BULKY WASTE
 Under the Home Appliance Recycling Law, retailers are required to take air-conditioning units, TVs, refrigerators and washing machines for a fee.
 Home appliances other than the above mentioned items should be taken to the specified collection site on the specified date with a bulky waste sticker (purchase from the ward office or town hall) or to the refuse disposal facilities. At the refuse disposal facilities, there is a charge of ¥100 per 10kg.
