THE ROLE OF THE LIBRARY
In order to survive in a modern society that changes rapidly, it is necessary
to keep up with the various information to deal with these changes. At
our town library, anyone can gain access to information in printed materials
such as books, newspapers and magazines or electronic information like
video tapes.
We currently hold 90,000 books, 10 different types of newspapers, 148
different types of magazines, 800 video tapes and 300 cassette tapes.
Anyone from the very young to the elderly can freely read, watch, borrow
or research at the library.
Due to the diversities of lifestyles, a wider range of information is
now required by individuals. While promoting and playing an important
role in lifelong learning, we endeavor to collect information materials
following your individual requests as much as possible, and we hope that
you find books that enrich your life. |

HOW TO BORROW BOOKS
Please bring a license or identification card that can confirm your address
(e.g. a driver's license, health insurance card etc.) for registration.
We will issue a library card that can be used for borrowing our books.
By presenting your library card, you can borrow up to ten books (or up
to five magazines) and two audio-visual materials such as video tapes.
The lending period is for two weeks.
You can borrow back issues of magazines (new issues cannot be borrowed).

HOW TO RETURN BOOKS
Please return books and information materials at the counter.
When the library is closed, please return materials to the return box
located at the library entrance. However, please do not put audio-visual
materials such as videos in the return box. |

HOW TO SEARCH FOR SPECIFIC BOOKS
Please use the "Book search" system. Please ask staff if you have any
questions.
When the book you are looking for is not available at that time, you
can make a request for it. If the book is being lent out, we will contact
you as soon as the book is returned.
The books that are not stored at our library can be obtained from other
libraries or purchased to meet your requests as much as possible. We can
also obtain information materials from the National Diet Library if requested.

Please consult our staff if you have things that you wish to find out
or need to do a search on regarding work or life related issues.
We will help you conduct research in confidence, by using necessary information
materials. Please feel free to ask for assistance. |

MOBILE LIBRARY SERVICE
The mobile library "Karamatsu" circulates around houses in
your area.
The schedule is announced in the Apr. issue of "Bulletin Karuizawa"
every year. |

HOME VISIT LIBRARY
For elderly and handicapped people who have difficulty in
visiting the library, we offer a book delivery service to your home. Please
contact the library if you wish to utilize this service. |

CHILDREN'S LIBRARY
At our "Children's Library", we have a wide range of books including
picture books, reading materials, educational books and picture-card shows.
A library card can be issued as soon as a child is born.
We have a "Ohanashi no kai" at 3:00pm on the third Saturday of every
month, in which children can enjoy looking at picture books and picture-card
shows.
We also hold a session relating to children's books and reading, "Session
on children and books" for mothers. Please feel free to join in. |

EVENTS FOR CULTURAL ENRICHMENT
 At
the library, we hold cultural courses and book clubs for adults as the
demands arises. The details are announced in the bulletin. We look forward
to your participation.
